2024 Oscars winners: 'Oppenheimer' dominates, Emma Stone upsets in Best Actress (2024)

Awards season chatter about the dark stylings of Oppenheimer, snow-white chill of Anatomy of a Fall, and the hot pink highlights of Barbie ended tonight, when the 2024 Oscars turned major contenders' blue-sky dreams into gold.

The night's big Oscar winners included long-standing Best Picture frontrunner Oppenheimer, Best Director winner Christopher Nolan, and the historical epic's Best Actor champion Cillian Murphy — all three of whom spent weeks building buzz atop multiple victories at precursor ceremonies, from January's Golden Globes to February's SAG Awards.

Other winners who capped sustained awards season success over the last few months include Best Supporting Actress winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) and Best Supporting Actor victor Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer). The biggest surprise of the night, however, saw Best Actress go to Poor Things star Emma Stone, who began the season as a front-running contender before Killers of the Flower Moon's history-making nominee Lily Gladstone overtook her in the race after winning the SAG Award for Best Actress in February.

Among other winners were Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell, the brother-sister songwriting duo who set a record when they won Best Original Song for their Barbie hit "What Was I Made For?" — a feat that made them the youngest people in history to win two Oscars at age 22 and 26, respectively. Eilish and O'Connell won the award over fellow Barbie song "I'm Just Ken," though the Mark Ronson/Andrew Wyatt-penned number made headlines for Best Supporting Actor contender Ryan Gosling's show-stopping, cameo-filled performance of the song during the ceremony.
